A quick read on Brunello Di Montalcino

The most prominent wine growing area in Tuscany and some of the most sought after wines in the world. The wines are powerful, complex & have tremendous aging potential. In the late 1800’s when wines from this area began being produced they were meant for early drinking. Now these wines are not typically released until nearly 5 years after harvest. This current vintage, 2010, will have drinking window it’s original vignerons would have thought impossible. Some top producers are Casanova di Neri, Caparzo, Il Poggione & Ucceliera.

1. Il Poggione 2010 Brunello Di Montalcino
One of the best bottlings ever by one of the worlds top producers. Wine does not get much better than this. This wine is concentrated and powerful. This bottle will carefully evolve for 20 years plus, yet offers a significant level of near term enjoyment for impatient hedonist.

2. Casanova di Neri 2009 “Tenuta Nuova” Brunello di Montalcino
Former Wine Spectator #1 wine in the world. A perfect 100 point score from Robert Parker in this years 2010 vintage. This is easily the most sought after Brunello’s in existence. Top bottlings sell out in days. The Tenuta Nuova is one of those wines that all serious wine drinkers should have at least once in their lifetime.

3. Donna Olga 2004 Brunello di Montalcino
Brunello’s will always show best with a little age. This 2004 has over a decade under its belt and is starting to develop the layers and complexity that this region is known for. Donna Olga is a small 11 hectare estate with one of the top women in the business at the helm. The retail on this wine is typically under $50 bucks, so a great value for an already aged bottling from a great producer.
